CM of West Bengal since 2011, Mamta Banerjee is an Indian politician who was first a member of the Congress and later founded the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC). The TMC supremo has been elected to Parliament seven times before contesting the West Bengal assembly elections. In the state assembly, she represents the Bhawanipur constituency.
A painter and poet by interest, Banerjee established herself as a major power in West Bengal in 2011 after ending 34 years of CPI-M rule in the state. He led his party to victory in 34 of the 42 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and won a second term as CM with a heavy mandate in the 2016 assembly elections.
Banerjee, better known as 'Didi', has previously served as a Union Minister in three central governments during both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) governments. She was the first woman to serve in the Ministry of Railways twice. With her vast experience in politics, Mamta has now emerged as a major challenge for the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Starting from the student wing of Congress in the 1970s, CM has been involved in politics since the age of 15. She rose to Fame after the CPM defeated Somnath Chatterjee in the 1984 General Assembly elections. The rift between him and Congress came to light in the 1990s when he accused Congress of being a puppet of the CPI (M) in the state. He co-founded his party with Mukul Roy in 1997 and became the primary opposition.
The 66-year-old politician made headlines in 2005 when the TMC actively opposed various land acquisitions, causing problems at the grassroots level to local farmers in the name of industrial development by the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government. In 2006, he was forcibly stopped en route to Singur to oppose the Tata Motors project, which later led to TMC legislators breaking furniture in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. During the Nandigram protests, where 14 villagers were killed, Banerjee wrote a letter to the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling it "state-sponsored violence".
In 2011, she became the first woman Chief Minister of West Bengal, with TMC winning 184 seats and ending communist rule. Soon after winning the election, he returned 400 acres of land to the farmers of Singur. He also brought many reforms in the field of education and health. After her first term as CM, she came back to the chair after a resounding victory, winning 211 seats out of 293 seats.
As Chief Minister, she also became a part of controversies in the state with some financial scandals. In Sharda Chitfund, Rose Valley Scam, or Narada, many of his cabinet ministers were accused of money laundering and were later jailed.
In 2020, the Banerjee government was criticized for tackling the coronavirus epidemic and hiding the facts surrounding the crisis. The opposition has accused him of doing 'politics of appeasement before the West Bengal assembly elections.
On March 17, 2020, TMC released the party manifesto promising to generate 500,000 employment opportunities annually and provide free door-to-door ration distribution. Banerjee also guaranteed annual financial assistance to the poor, along with Rs 12,000 as annual financial assistance to the backward community. He also promised annual assistance of Rs 10,000 per acre to the farmers. In the field of education, he announced a credit card up to Rs 10 lakh for students pursuing higher education.
The chief minister is contesting directly from Nandigram along with his former aide Suvendu Adhikari, who is contesting the Bengal assembly elections from the BJP.
